About us

Our approach

Our Mission

Lotus flowers are symbols of rebirth and purity, able to grow clean and bright despite muddy ground. This potential to rise above difficulties to grow into something beautiful inspired our organization’s name.

Lotus Buds’ mission is to empower underprivileged children by ensuring equitable access to quality education, healthcare, and community engagement, breaking cycles of poverty and creating opportunities for every child to thrive in Cairo, Egypt.

Our Vision

Lotus flowers symbolize rebirth and purity, blooming beautifully even from muddy grounds. This inspiring resilience inspired the name of our organization and center.

We envision a world where every child, regardless of socio-economic background, has the opportunities, support, and resources needed to realize their full potential and lead a healthy, fulfilled life.

Founder’s Story

Wafaa Jorgensen is the founder and CEO of Lotus Buds. Born and raised in Boulak al-Dakrour, Cairo, she earned her Master’s degree in International Marketing & Management from Copenhagen Business School in Denmark.

After moving abroad in 1998 and experiencing life with accessible education and opportunities, Wafaa gained new perspective. On visits back to her childhood neighborhood in Cairo, she was struck by the stark contrast in living conditions, particularly for children.

Recognizing the need for a safe space where children could learn, eat nutritious meals, and enjoy their childhood, Wafaa established the Lotus Buds Center in Boulak al-Dakrour. The center opened in May 2023, providing children with literacy programs, math education, Egyptian history and culture lessons, and exposure to the world beyond their borders.

Working with local community partners in Cairo, Lotus Buds has learned that targeted support in education, healthcare, and nutrition creates transformative change in children’s lives. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn and grow, and that change happens when children have someone who believes in their potential.

About the Lotus Buds Center

The Lotus Buds Center in Boulak al-Dakrour, Cairo, is a safe and nurturing space dedicated to supporting underprivileged children. The center provides essential resources such as filtered water, clean restrooms, fully equipped classrooms, internet-enabled computers, and a functional kitchen. Along with these facilities, it offers daily nutritious meals, hygiene supplies, educational support, tutoring, recreational activities, healthcare guidance, nutritional education, and vocational training opportunities, ensuring children not only learn but also thrive in a healthy and supportive environment.

Through generous donations and community involvement, a donated space has been transformed into a modern learning hub with multiple classrooms, a computer lab, and a kitchen. Evening classes are held from Sunday to Thursday for children aged 5–15, allowing them to access quality education and a sense of belonging. Local partnerships and dedicated volunteers, including program alumni, play a vital role in mentoring the children and preparing healthy meals, creating a strong, community-centered atmosphere. Through local partnerships, the Center is staffed by a dedicated team of volunteers, including program alumni, and includes visiting specialists and educators who supplement daily learning with health interventions and other topics. All of our volunteers play a vital role in mentoring the children, preparing healthy meals, and creating a strong, community-centered atmosphere.

About Boulak al-Dakrour

Boulak al-Dakrour is a vibrant neighborhood in the heart of Cairo, Egypt, with strong community roots and untapped potential. While historically stable with access to basic education, this Cairo community now faces challenges from decades of social and economic changes. Despite educational gaps and limited healthcare access, the children of Boulak al-Dakrour display remarkable resilience and eagerness to learn.

Many families demonstrate strong community spirit and genuine commitment to improving their children’s futures, and our founder recognized the significant potential in local youth who, despite facing considerable hardships, show curiosity and energy for growth. While the neighborhood lacks adequate supervision systems and school follow-up, this creates opportunities for targeted intervention. Boulak al-Dakrour represents one of many Egyptian communities needing safe spaces for children with access to quality education, healthcare, nutrition, and clean water. By establishing our center here, we address critical gaps while building on existing community strengths. Starting in Boulak al-Dakrour, we aim to expand across poverty-affected neighborhoods throughout Cairo and Egypt, bringing essential services to more children in need.
